To observe the one-year anniversary of Geshe-la’s passing, after a week of preparation, events were held over three days: On Sunday, September 6, 2009, Dharma Centre students and friends gathered for a 3-hour Vajrayogini puja in honour of Geshe-la’s lifelong practice. The puja was led by Lamas Kunga Dhondup and Tashi Wangyal from the Pema Ts’al Buddhist Monastic Institute in Pokhara, Nepal, and by Lama Jampa, now the Centre’s resident lama. The wonderful Pema Ts’al monks had performed 300,000 mantras in preparing ‘tsa-tsa’s’ from Geshe-la’s bones. The preparation of the statue for the ceremonies was extensive, meticulous, and entirely in accord with the sutra and tantra texts as translated into Tibetan by Lochen Rinchen Zangpo. We greatly appreciate the work of all of the Pema Ts’al monks in the preparations for these ceremonies. The Vajrayogini puja was followed by a ceremony to open the eyes of the large new statue of Sakya Pandita that was commissioned as part of Geshe-la's bequest to the Centre, and was consecrated during the present ceremonies. Later, a Manjushri puja was held in honour of Sakya Pandita.
On Monday, September 7, 2009, long-life prayers were offered to H.H. Sakya Trizin on the occasion of his birthday. These were followed by a commemoration of Geshe-la’s life and a prayer for his quick return. After this, another 3-hour Vajrayogini puja was held and later the students recited together, at H. E. Khonrig Ratna Vajra Sakya Rinpoche's request, the aspirational prayer of the Bodhisattva Samanthabhadra.
On Tuesday, September 8, 2009, the commemorative ceremonies concluded with a Green Tara puja led by Lama Kunga and Lama Tashi.
